Surgical Obturators

A Surgical Obturator is a prosthesis made by  a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist after a patient has had a tumor removed from their soft or hard palate.  This prosthesis will enable the patient to be able to speak, chew, and swallow without food or drink leaking in the nasal cavity.    The Surgical Obturator is immediately placed at the time of the surgical resection of the tumor.  This device is not of cosmetic nature, but of medical necessity.  It prevent the patient from being on tube feedings for the rest of their life.  The Surgical Obturator is worn for approximately 10 days until you can get a Interim Obturator made.   You will wear the Interim Obturator until the tissues have completely healed.
